PSYROK and LI’L SISTER JEN: Calculus
By Ben Martin

One way to avoid fall-outs with your bandmates is to never meet them. An unusual approach it may be, but it’s working well for Wellington-based artist Psyrok and his vocalist Li’l Sister Jen, who lives in Stockholm, Sweden. ‘Calculus’ is their second EP together, and while it would be easy to use the record as a lead in to another ‘isn’t the internet amazing’ discussion, the music deserves more and is good enough to stand alone without the prop of the background narrative. Fitting comfortably into the Portishead/Massive Attack genre, this is not a sound that boldly announces itself but seeps gently into your consciousness; suddenly you find yourself nodding to one of the many subtle and pleasing motifs, or pausing to notice another intricacy in the vocals. Perhaps inevitably given the nature of the collaboration, Larsson’s vocals do not take centre stage, but provide the sprinkle of magic dust on Psyrok’s already skillfully arranged compositions. Perfect for a super chilled summer evening or a late night drive, there’s a lot to like about this. ‘Calculus’ is available for free download on the Psyrok website.
